Last Friday night I experienced a miracle. With almost no pursuasion at all Stephen Harding took me to see Pride & Prejudice. Anyone who has spoken to Stephen about Austin's much loved classic will no that this is an event worthy of heralding the second coming...
He did admirably though and managed to enjoy himself. The only slightly dodgy moment was when he reacted to the giggling Bennet sisters by saying he'd rather be stuck in traffic than listen to their high pitched simpering.
Despite his less than enthusiastic welcome to the film I have to say I was on giddy tender hooks. I have a very faithful and ardent quarter in my heart that will forever be devoted to the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. The contained sexual tension, the intense looks accross a room and the nearly transparent dripping wet shirt accross the rippling torso of Mister Darcy.... Excuse me I need a minute...
So to be honest, the current adaptation was fighting an up hill struggle to beat down my affection for the 90s version, but... it may have succeeded... Definitely not better, but different, engaging and thoroughly enjoyable, Nightley actually pulled off Elizabeth Bennet whilst Mathew MacFadyen was positively edible as Darcy, smoulder, smoulder...
Hmmm... a must for all ladies though blokes may prefer to see something else. For once I'm not going to pick it apart and tell you about my favourite bits. This is a lovely tale best experinced whole. Hmmm enjoy... xc
