Belgrade is like a collision of cultures caught in a time warp. Snapshots of Eastern Germany, Spain and Greece all preserved in the 70s with flashes of the 21st century in a magazine here and a perfume advert there. It’s probably the most intriguing city I’ve been to in a long time…
Today we arrived at our splendid 70s hotel, checked in, siestad and took a stroll into the old town to soak in the city. The sun was warm and tanning our pasty British skin and the people seem friendly and alive. We ate dinner in a gorgeous restaurant sitting under the stars and listening to Serbia’s version of a barbershop quartet. The food was delicious and though apparently expensive by Serbian standards it was dirt cheap and tasty by mine. Hmmm, nice wine!
We sat with two lovely Fins, Laura and Petra, who, like us, could talk for Finland. We had a lovely meal setting the world to rights and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the church in our countries. The more I travel the more I learn. I’m grateful for these opportunities, long may they last… xc
