Astounding. Compelling. Terrifying. Brilliant... I have just finished the pages of George Orwell's modern masterpiece Nineteen Eighty Four. I am in awe.
What a world. What a tale. If you have not read this book much of it will seem surprisingly familiar. I was told it was the grandaddy of modern dystopian fiction, but I had no idea just how much the concept (and language) of this book had penetrated the zeitgeist of today. Orwell gives language to some of our greatest fears. I don't want to say too much about the story, or the journey of Wilson, the protagonist through who's eyes we experience a world gone mad, I only want to encourage you to explore it for yourself.
Already I have read some great books this year (and it's only January!) but it's hard for me to imagine a book that will better the world, intellect or the pull to keep reading as this. Ah! What do I read next? Is it all downhill from here?
